HORSIN' AROUND WITH VAN HARGIS
"Equipping Your Horse - Saddles Fit The Horse"

Saddles are one of the biggest mistakes I see people make because they either try to find a saddle that fits them, or a saddle that is cheap. First and foremost, consider a saddle that fits your horse. If a saddle fits your horse, you're going to eliminate a lot of health problems as well as a lot of behavioral problems. Often times, a saddle won't fit a horse properly, and you'll notice things like the horse slinging its head, prancing, or starting to develop habits that are associated with pain.

You can somewhat compensate for a saddle that doesn't fit properly with the purchase of a really good pad. The pads I like are usually made of a soft felt material(for sweat absorption). I prefer more natural materials as opposed to synthetic, yet I am always open to the advances in technology in the horse industry. A pad is merely a multi-functional cushion between the horse and the saddle. No matter the material quality of the pad it is important to find a saddle that fits the horse properly and comfortably.

.

There are a lot of good saddles on the market today, and you want to be sure you invest in a really good top-quality saddle. A saddle doesn't need to be new (or old) to be good. One saddle can fit a variety of different horses, but be certain it will fit your horse before you buy it. A heavy saddle made of good quality leather will probably last you as long as you are able to ride. Remember, saddles need maintenance from time to time.

.

Once you've found a saddle that fits your horse, you need to be sure it is also a good fit for you. Consider your body size and what type of riding you will be doing as you select a saddle type and size. The tree should be of the right length to feel secure and comfortable to you. A shorter tree will keep you in place better, but a longer tree is commonly preferred. Again, considering the comfort of the horse, prefer a saddle with top quality wool lining, either real wool or top notch synthetic wool. A quality lining will last longer, is more comfortable for the horse and will allow the horse's back to breathe better.
